Heating system preparation and maintenance before winter

News | 1.10.2020

The heating system needs to be prepared before winter and those who have neglected maintenance are now really busy. The damp weather indicates that the heating season is starting. And so many people are turning their heating systems on after more than six months of a break.

What needs to be paid attention to so that everyone works as it should and no unexpected outage happens in winter?

1. Boiler service - better late than never

If you have a gas boiler but you have not yet invited a service technician for the regular inspection this year, prepare yourselves for a longer waiting time. Most people wait with the service inspections until the beginning of the heating season and therefore technicians are barely managing to address any potential defects. It is better to make an appointment and have your boiler cleaned and adjusted in advance.

A professionally maintained boiler has a lower fuel consumption and above all, it prevents the risk of a more serious defect, or even the risk of harmful combustion gas leak.

2. Boiler is not the only part of the heating system

The boiler is working at full speed but the radiators are still cold? Try to vent them. Air can get into the heating system during summer when it is not running, cumulating in the radiators. If so, the heating water cannot flow sufficiently and heat them up. The result is that the boiler heats the water but the rooms are cold and the ends of the radiators are cold.

When you are done with venting, check that the water pressure in the heating system did not drop. You should check the heating water pressure regularly during the season, at least once a month - any leaks in the system are immediately noticeable.

3. Setting the thermostatic heads

If you have a room thermostat in the same room as the radiators with thermostatic heads, check that the heads are completely open. Then, regulate the required room temperature using the thermostat. If you want to reduce the temperature in the room by closing the heads, the thermostat will continue signalling the boiler to heat. You will be unnecessarily heating water that will not get into the radiators.

4. The system properties are also affected by reconstructions

A replacement of windows or interior doors usually brings changes in the air flow through the apartment or house. Modern, namely plastic windows can basically seal the room completely hermetically. The same applies to interior doors.

If you have a gas heater in your bathroom, you should definitely add a ventilation grille to the bathroom door so that the heater can suck in air. If you have insulated the façade or roof, you have probably considerably reduced the energy loss of the building. You should invite a heating engineer to reduce the boiler output with the new parameters so that you can truly save on heating.

5. Do not wait until the old boiler stops working

Start watching your costs of heating and get ready for a potential replacement of the boiler in summer when you are not using the heating system. If you have an old gas boiler, check the costs of gas at the beginning and at the end of the heating season. Modern condensing boilers have a gas consumption lower by about 40% when compared with their atmospheric predecessors. You can easily calculate the return on investment in the form of fuel cost savings.
