Energy labels and ecodesign ErP

From 26 September 2015, various EU directives became valid concerning boilers and heaters. These concerns Energy-related Products - ErP.

  • Directive No. 811/2013 labelling of space heaters (boilers) up to 70 kW inclusive

  • Directive No. 812/2013 labelling of water heaters and solar devices up to 500 l

  • Directive No. 813/2013 Ecodesign requirements for space heaters (boilers ) up to 400 kW inclusive

  • Directive No. 814/2013 Ecodesign requirements for water heaters up to 400 kW and storage tanks up to 2.000 l

Energy labels

ErP directives introduce the obligation for the producer to label products with an energy label. Consumers have been familiar with these types of labels that have been used on white goods in recent years. The label indicates the consumption of energy by the classification into a group marked with a letter and other parameters of the product. This is a simple and user-friendly diagram that graphically indicates the most important parameters of the product and enables the customer to make a faster and easier choice. All boilers will be fitted this label distributed by us from 26 September 2015.

Ekodesign

The ecodesign directive valid from 26 September states the minimum economic and ecological limits required when introducing EU products applicable to energy consumption onto the market. It particular, it states the minimum energy efficiency for boilers and heaters and the energy classifications. It applies to space heaters (boilers) up to 400 kW and water heaters up to 400 kW and reservoirs up to 2,000 l. Stating a minimum energy efficiency of 86 % for boilers. However, please note that it is not possible to replace this efficiency with traditional efficiency, which is calculated from the combustion heat or caloric value of natural gas. The manufacturer calculates on the basis of the boiler parameters, the minimum energy efficiency of the boiler (e.g. 92%) and classifies the boiler into the relevant energy class. This class is then stated on the boiler or the heater. The value of the minimum energy efficiency of 86 % is only fulfilled by a condensing boiler.

Practical consequences

Products that do not fulfil the requirements for minimum efficiency will not be released onto the EU market. In reality, this means the end of atmospheric boilers. The exception are boilers for heating up to 10 kW and with heating of water up to 30 kW in the B category (chimney) that are terminated into common smoke flues (minimum energy efficiency 75 %).

After 26 September 2015, there will be a sale of these boilers in the clearance sale. This means that products stored in wholesale sellers, retail sale sellers and assembly firms will be sold in the clearance sale. The clearance sale of Thermona atmospheric boilers will be held by KONTHERM, s.r.o. These boilers will be able to be installed and commissioned without any time restriction.
